This module adds the device camera as a scan source to the Barcode app, so operators can scan without a dedicated hardware scanner.

A floating button opens the camera with Odoo's own barcode scanner dialog. The code it reads is fed into the same event bus a hardware scanner uses, so the active screen handles it exactly like any other scan. The button is plugged in through the barcode_app_widgets registry of barcode_scanner, without patching the app.

AI-generated from the code · Odoo 18.0

Adds a floating camera button to the Barcode app so operators can scan barcodes with the device camera instead of a hardware scanner, and the scanned code is handled exactly like a normal scan.

This module lets users scan barcodes with the camera of the device they are using, directly inside the Barcode app. A floating button with a camera icon appears on screen and opens Odoo's own barcode scanning dialog using the back camera.

  • The button only shows when the current screen is actually waiting for scans and when the browser can open the camera (for example a secure connection). It is hidden while a scan is in progress.
  • Once a code is read, it is sent through the same channel a hardware scanner uses, so the active screen reacts in the same way as with a physical scanner. The scan is marked as coming from the camera.
  • If the user closes the dialog without reading anything, or the camera is refused, nothing is sent and the button becomes available again.

The module does not add menus, database fields or reports. It plugs into the Barcode app through the widget registry provided by the barcode_scanner module, without modifying the app itself. It relies on the barcodeScannerBarcode service and the barcode_scanned event to deliver the code. The only visible element is the floating camera button, labelled "Camera scan".

terminal Installation and usage

OCA documentation · Odoo 18.0

Install barcode_camera next to a feature module such as barcode_stock.

A camera button appears in the bottom-right corner of every screen that reads a scan, whichever module it comes from: the home screen, the picking list and picking, the move wizard, the selectors, and so on. Tap it, point the camera at a barcode, and the scan is processed as if it came from a hardware scanner. The codes read are the ones Odoo's scanner dialog reads: EAN, UPC, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, QR, Data Matrix and the like.

There is nothing to register for that: a screen reads scans through the hooks of barcode_scanner (useBarcodeHandler), which counts the screens doing so, and the button shows whenever one does.

The browser only gives access to the camera in a secure context (HTTPS or localhost). Without it, like Odoo's own camera buttons, the button is not shown, and hardware or manual scanning remain available.
